Well folks I did it! I biked from to Baseline! Total 9.1 km / 5.7 miles in 35 minutes!
It was hard, but it was beautiful on the Woodroffe bike path! And I can't believe it didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would. I was so early for work even with showering there. The second part of this goal is to bike home, but now that I've done it once I don't think that will be a problem.

My arms and back are definitely feeling yesterday's workout, which is great! It means I worked hard yesterday in that short period of time.

I'm looking forward to next week and really getting into my new routine. Tomorrow I'll be working on cardio and abs.

Total Biking: 11.4 miles / 18.2 km

Thursday I worked 12-8 so I didn't go to bed at a decent time and couldn't get up early. Friday night my daughter ended up with the flu, so I didn't get to do my Walk the Micah Road Walk-a-thon. In fact I didn't do much of anything, except yell and scream all weekend due to lack of sleep. Sunday night I was packing my gym bag and getting everything all set. It was later than usual, but I was still going to get up early. My daughter got sick again and I ended up on the couch with her most of the night.

This morning I procrastinated so much. I hit snooze a bunch of times. When I did finally get up I ended up poking around Facebook looking at pictures. I finally left and went to the gym. I got there at 6:30 and worked out for 30 minutes.

I walked to work and showered there, which I'm going to start doing from now on. I'll miss the sauna, but at least I won't have to fight for the shower. And it gives me some extra time since I'm already at the office.

Biking: 4 miles

Elliptical: 0.45 miles / 73 cal / 5 min / L8

Seated Row: 70 lbs x 8 reps I thought I could do it...instead I did...55 lbs x 4 sets

Elliptical: 0.23 miles / 32 cal / 2 min / L8

Lateral Pull Down: 70 lbs x 3 sets (I felt it in my back while working out and set 3 killed!)

Chest Press: 55 lbs x 3 sets

I now have a goal. A real, tangible goal with a date. My little sister's birthday is June 30th. She is trying to lose weight and tone up. Meeting a goal is easier when you have someone else striving to reach the same/similar goal.

Goal Date:
- June 26th

Objectives:
- To workout 5-6 times/week with at least 3 of those as heavy workouts at the gym

Goal Weight:
- To be in the 230 lb range I'm aiming for somewhere between 230-235

I am contemplating biking to Baseline bus station to catch the bus in the morning. It's a 5.7 miles trek one way. I'm scared! It's a long trek at least for me. I know I can do it. So, here is the idea for my new workout schedule for the next 7 weeks:

Day 1: Upper Body
Day 2: Biking 11.4 miles
Day 3: Abs
Day 4: Biking 11.4 miles
Day 5: Lower Body

Tomorrow is trial day. I'll let you know how the biking goes.

I've started a new gym routine. I'm getting up at 4:45 am again. I'm able to get to the gym by 6 am which gives me a full hour. I'm no longer going to work on my small muscle groups. I'm working all the big muscle groups and adding more cardio. After every machine I'm doing 2-5 minutes of extreme cardio, of course to start I'm only doing 2 minutes, but I'll work my way up.

Let me tell you, it was a very hard workout. I was sweating like crazy! And I'm quite tired today, but that's more from lack of sleep than anything.

This morning was so hard to get up and out of bed. I managed, barely. I wanted so badly to crawl back into bed. I biked to Fallowfield. I even got their earlier than usual, next week I'll be getting up at 4:45 so I can leave by 5.

I found out Wednesday night that my thyroid checked out okay. I do not have any thyroid problems. I'm not going back to the clinic again. I have been feeling okay lately, but if things get worse again I will go back to the clinic and ask them to test everything they can. For now I'll just leave well enough alone.

Next week my goals are to get up at 4:45 every morning and to start really paying close attention to what I'm eating.

I also plan on putting in some workout time this weekend too.

With the arrival of spring brings Spring Cleaning and Tunes Ups. I did a very basic tune up on my bike yesterday but will do a more complete one this week.

Here is a bicycle tune up check list that I found:
  1. Pump it up!
  2. Check for wear and damage
  3. Check break lever and caliper action
  4. Check break-pads
  5. Check cables
  6. Lube the chain
  7. Tighten lose bolts and screws
  8. Clean the bike
So, after 3 weeks of not going to the gym and really not exercising I'm trying to get back to it. Yesterday I put air in my bike tires and WD-40 on my bike chain. I biked a total of 5.2 miles (8.36 km).

I had to pay $1 to put air in my tires! I shared with the next guy who needed air in his car tires. My bike chain fell off, but I'm pretty sure that's because my pants kept catching in the chain. I will never again laugh at another person who tucks their one pant leg into their sock, who knew?

If any of you have ever done any real biking you'll know what happens when you haven't biked in a long time and start out fresh. Your posterior hurts an awful lot, but I'm pushing through the pain. =)

This morning was a challenge in many respects. First was waking up, I desperately wanted to just go back to bed. It's easy to fall into a routine of NOT going to the gym. I finished packing my bag and the next challenge was my gym bag. It's too heavy and awkward, what I need is a large back pack. If my gym bag slips the wrong way I almost topple over. The other issue of course was sitting down on my bike seat, I had to make sure I lifted off the seat when going over large bumps. The important thing is I DID IT!

At the gym, I only worked out for about 30 minutes. Since, I'd already done my cardio with the biking I opted for just a 6 minute warm up on the Elliptical. I didn't want to over do it so I just did 1 set on the machines. I did have moments of feeling dizzy, but I pushed through it. I'll find out Wednesday evening if the problem is my thyroid or if I have to keep looking.

Biking: 4 miles / 6.42 km

Update

Good afternoon. It seems I keep being hit with one illness after another. I'm rather sick and tired of being sick and tired. This week I was hit with the flu again! I'm guessing my immune system is weaker than normal and that's why I keep catching what's going around. February I had the flu, March I had a bad head cold and now April the flu! Not to mention in between I've had issues with weakness, fatigue and dizziness. The good news is that I went to the blood lab this morning for my thyroid test. I hope to know sooner than later, but I suspect I won't know until next week. I will keep you posted.

On the bright side of life I seem to have found a solution to my problem of getting up early and trying to get enough time in at the gym and still make it to work by 8 am. I'm going to bike to Fallowfield bus station. I'll buy a lock (I needed to buy one anyway) and bike there in the morning and bike home at night. This way I'll be getting in a lot more cardio! I've got some tuning up to do with my bike so I'll probably get everything ready to go this weekend and start back full throttle Monday, April 20th.

Yes, I know I keep doing the on again off again thing, but as long as I keep trying eventually it will stick. And starting over and over is better than giving up completely.

This morning I did a general warm up:
Touch Toes: 15
Lunges: 10 per leg
Side Lunges: 10 per side
Butt Kicks: 75 feet (or 7 times across my garage floor)
High Knees: 75 feet (or 7 times across my garage floor)
Arm Circles: 20
Trunk Twists: 20
Side Bends: 20 per side

Butt Kicks and High Knees are really tough! They look so easy, but when I actually do these exercises...WOW can I ever feel it!

Then I went for a walk/run. For those of you who know me you know that running and I do not get along even when I was in shape many many years ago.

I didn't go far but I'm trying out interval training. I was going to walk for 35 minutes but I realized I only had 15 minutes left before I needed to get home and get ready for work I just stuck to the park paths.

I walked to the park and at the beginning of the path I ran for 60 steps and then walked for 60 steps. I did this back and forth for 15 minutes ending up back home.

Tomorrow the plan is to walk moderately for 15 minutes and then do the 60 seconds of running/60 seconds of walking. I will repeat the walk/run 5 times finishing with 15 minutes of moderate walking. (Since I do not have a stop watch I will be using the 60 steps method.)

My goal is to come up with a routine that works best for me. Something I can stick to and do while at home. I've seen a lot of workouts that would be great, but going to a gym just isn't going to work for me right now. So, I will improvise and come up with something that works for me even when the snow flies.

I did go biking Saturday (5.2 miles/8.4 km) and Sunday (1.8 miles 2.9 km) but I ate junk food all weekend.

My focus now is also to eat healthier and no more takeout, unless it's a low fat sub. I still don't want to count calories if I can help it. If I eat healthier and keep my portion size under control I should be okay. I just have to remind myself weight loss doesn't come easy. It's a long process, it's a lifestyle change, which is why I don't want to count calories.

Until tomorrow!

Sorry it's been a few days since I last updated my blog. We had a very busy weekend with the kids. Saturday was the kids birthday party at A Gym Tale. We all had a great time! Sunday I sneezed and threw my back out...yes I said I sneezed! I guess it's from my Wii boxing challenge on Friday and my back was already a bit stiff. So, I rested my back as much as I could throughout the day and later in the afternoon I made supper for everyone. There were 8 adults and my 3 kids. I made honey dijon chicken and risoto. It was a great evening. The cake was great, Riley actually ate some too.

Over the weekend I bought a digital scale. I was NOT happy with what I saw on the scale. I weigh a lot more than I thought. When I first stepped onto the scale it said 247.8 lbs. Apparently, it was the wrong time of day to step on the scale. The next morning when I weighed myself I was 243.8 lbs. I'm still not happy about this number, but all I can do is keep trying and watch what eat more closely.

I am determined NOT to let the number on the scale deter me from my goals. I've decided to ramp up my exercise this week. The plan is to bike everyday 5.3 miles (8.6 km). I have done this both yesterday and today.

At work I am in training for the next few weeks, but I will try to write everyday. Good day everyone and be blessed!
Good morning. So, I didn't set two alarms, and I managed to wake up at 5 am with just the one alarm, I didn't even hit the snooze button.

I decided on walking since I biked last night. Since today is a holiday my father-in-law drove me to work. This gave me extra time for my walk. My walk this morning was 2.85 miles (4.6 km). I was gone an hour, but stopped to do my 16 push ups at the beginning and end of my walk. I also did 30 step ups using a curb.

I brought my 1 lb weights as usual but left the ankle weight at home. I decided until I get new shoes I won't add the extra weight to my ankle. I used my weights straight above my head, punching out at chest level, flapping my arms like I'm trying to fly and pumping up at chest level. I love to look ridiculous!

Oh! I came across my little skunk friend again this morning. Only this time he wasn't just crossing the street. He was dilly dallying around. I took a very wide berth since I couldn't just wait for him to cross the road. I'd rather play it safe than end up smelling like a skunk. He was a cute little thing though.

I am pleased with my total distance from last week. I increased my distance by 7 miles over last week. I must sat last night's last minute bike ride really pumped me up for the week. My energy level was starting to drag and I could feel the laziness want to take hold again.

I can't say exactly what came over me last night, but I went further and felt better than ever before! I feel completely revived and hope this feeling continues.

Have a blessed day! God is with you.
Okay, so I didn't bike to the river but I did go over the hill. I decided today was a biking day and went for my 4.3 mile route. At the corner of Strandherd and Longfields is the beginning of a slow hill. At least it looks like a slow hill, but when biking up, it feels like a mountain. I managed the without stopping, only to come to another hill on Greenbank just before Berrigan. I stopped for a few seconds once I reached the top, after two hills I needed a moment of composure. Then came the fun part, going downhill. I love going fast! It's such a rush. I love hearing the wind rush by my ears and feel the wind on my face. I've got a thing for speed. Unfortunately, the only time I get to go fast is after a hill. I haven't quite managed biking fast on my own yet. It will come in time. I have to remind myself I've only been at this a week. It takes longer than that to really build up endurance.

I did remember to stop at the beginning and end of my route to do 16 bench push ups each bench. These I managed without stopping. The second set was harder but by sure stubbornness I managed to go straight to 16.

I know I mentioned this yesterday, but it really has been harder to wake up in the mornings. This weekend I may take a morning off, but I'll make sure I still get in a walk or ride for the day.

I just found an interesting list of outdoor exercises. I am going to incorporate some, if not all of these. (excerpt from buildingbodies.ca)

LUNGES

Like all exercises, lunges should be done with absolutely perfect form. When done correctly, a lunge will work every single muscle in your legs at some point throughout the movement, including the all important Gluteus Maximus (that's the primary buttocks muscle, for those of you not anatomically inclined).

Variations on lunges that require no equipment include; Standing Lunges, Alternating Lunges, Elevated Lunges, Rear Lunges, and Walking Lunges.

PUSH UPS

Push ups have always been one of the most effective upper body exercises, but they have somehow gotten lost in the world of shiny chest press machines and fleets of various types of exercise benches. However, the push up is still an incredibly productive exercise, and it requires no equipment whatsoever. The 3 basic push up movements include Standard Grip, Wide Grip, and Close Grip. Alternating those 3 types will ensure maximal stimulation to the chest, shoulders, and triceps. In addition, you can elevate your hands to make the movement somewhat easier, or elevate your feet to make the movement somewhat harder.

Also, if you are really feeling brave, you can even throw in some Bounce and Clap Push Ups!

SQUATS

Many people simply don't understand the incredible power of doing a Squat the right way. Through improper instruction, inappropriate form, and just plain laziness, the incredible effectiveness of the Squat has been lost in the mix.

Variations including Standing Squats, One-Leg Squats, Plie Squats, Wide-Stance Squats, and Overhead Squats. Think you can't get enough stimulus out of Squats? Try doing 50 perfectly formed repetitions and see how tired your legs are!

STEP UPS

Brutal is the best word to describe this exercise when done properly! Using nothing more than a picnic bench, a piece of playground equipment, or even just a decent size rock, you simply step up onto your elevated surface, step down, and then repeat on the other side alternating back and forth.

By keeping your back straight and your head up the entire time, you will maximize recruitment of all of your leg muscles, and you will get an incredible cardiovascular workout as well. Go for perfect form and you will quickly see the benefit of this great exercise.

CHIN UPS

The outdoor version of Chin Ups and Pull ups can be done using anything from a low-hanging tree branch to any number of different pieces of playground equipment.

When done properly, Chin Ups and Pull Ups will humble most people, even avid exercisers. Bring your body up completely until your chin is at or above your hands, and lower back to the start under control. Repeat for as many as you can do!

UPHILL SPRINTS

Don't try this one until you can run a good 100-yard dash on level ground! This exercise is just what it sounds like - running uphill. Run up a decent size hill as fast as you can, walk back to the bottom, and repeat. Bring oxygen, but leave your pride at home, or else the hill will take it from you!

DUCK WALKS

This exercise is so simple, yet about as hard as it gets. Simply squat down until your thighs are at or below parallel to the ground, stay in that position, and start walking. Go about 10 steps and then walk backwards to your starting point. Repeat as many times as necessary (which won't be many) to reach total exhaustion!

As you can see, doing outdoor exercises has all of the benefits listed above including one benefit that wasn't listed - they are hard! If you are up to the challenge and sick of the gym, give your body and your mind an Earth-moment and get outside and play!

This will be a nice addition to my routine. For some reason I love making a fool of myself when it comes to exercise. I think it's because it forces me to laugh at myself and relax, so I enjoy what I'm doing.

Give it a shot. What have you got to lose? I've got lots to lose, lots of weight that is! Laugh and enjoy! Live life and Love!

Have a blessed day!

So, I walked home from Fallowfield station after work which was about 1 mile. And this evening I biked up to the Shell which added another 1.8 miles.
